How did you attract/address your audience?

Who would be the audience for your media product?

There are many types of thrillers, and many or them have the certificate 15. However pyschological thillers usually have the certificate 18, chloe and I wouldnt necessarly call our thriller a pyschological thiller so ours is aimed at 15 year olds and above.
We have generally aimed our thiller at teenagers and young adults as when we did our questionnaire the reponses we go back were that younger people prefered thrillers whereas older people didn't like them. As out characters are young this helps the audience to relate to them.

In a survey done by BFI in 2011 we can see that only 62% of males and 55% of women like thrillers, it is also more popular in minority ethnic groups than in the white population. But overall 59% of the population likes thrillers.

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

Editing Tuesday 19th January

Chloe and I were adding the finishing touches to our video, we added the scenes we filmed prior to the lesson, towards the end of the lesson we got feed back from our teacher on our almost finished opening scene, miss told us that our titles were boring and that we should change the font. Chloe and I worked to correct this until the end of the lesson.

Re-filming Sunday 17th January

Chloe and I went to our friend Charlottes house to finish filming for our final piece, we re-filmed the close up eye shot and the sequence where chloe puts on nail varnish, we took misses advise and added a close up of the nails being painted rather than just a long shot. We got the filming done quickly and effectively ready for the following lesson.

Editing Thursday 14th January

During this lesson me and chloe experiences difficulties with our sound, the voice overs were way too quite and when we tried to turn them up the voices would get really crackly, it turned out that it was the headphones, we also decided that we would record some sound for our piece. We could have gone onto a copyright free website and downloaded footsteps and a phone buzzing but we decided that we would record them ourselves.

Editing Thursday 7th January

In todays lesson chloe and I added the whispers that we had recorded when we filmed the first time, these are filmed with 4 different voices which makes it more intresting and also adds to the confusion of the audience as they have no idea who is after her. these were originally going to be text messages appearing on her phone but we changed it to whispers instead as we believed this was more representitive of a thriller.

Editing Tuesday 15th December

During this lesson we took on Misses comments and started to add more titles. This took a bit of time as we had to figure out how to make the titles and then how we would place them over the scene properly. We decided that we would have our titles in a white basic serif font, its very subtle and is not too eye catching. We also then raised the volume of the voice over as this was too quite.

Audience Feedback for our First Edit

When Chloe and I asked people what they though of our first edit, lots of people told us it was very good, that it obviously need some work but the overall outline was very good. We have had feedback from friends, family, other students in our class and our teacher. Our teacher has given up very helpful constructive criticisms, and Chloe and I are working through this and trying to improve.
Miss has told us that the shots we have used are very good but some of them are slightly out of focus, such as the close up of the eye and will need re filming, Chloe and I have planned to re film these shots on Sunday 17th January as this is when Charlotte's house is free again. Also at the send of the scene their is a voice over of a male voice on a phone, miss has told us that this needs to be louder, so that its clear enough to hear.
Miss has also told us that the music is too sinister for just the opening sequence and where I agree the music is very sinister I feel that its the perfect amount to go with the scene. However hearing this feedback me and Chloe did look for alternatives but found nothing that could fit quite as well. when we asked other students from the class they said that the music fit really well.
Miss also told us that the male character is too 'cliche' and that he wasnt necessary to the scene. But we feel as he is crucial and wont be taking him out.

Editing Thursday 10th December

We had just filmed the day before, and the first edit was due for the next day so me and chloe were trying to get the editing done in two hours, in our fist edit the shots are edited in a simple fashion but it reflects the overall outline that we were going for. It took us some time to first get started as we had both only used the editing program once, but towards the end of the two hours we were very confident with the software and were able to edit each video together so that it flowed well. We also added music into the background, we were very happy with the music as it is quite sinister and though the scene seems quite pieceful at first, it will hopefully cause the audience to question what really is going on in the scene. The music is a nice juxtaposition from the scene. We also tested out a few options for our title 'mark my words' and found that we liked an italic serif font the best.

We also had to put the voice over we got matt to film in otherwise the ending of the scene
wouldnt have made much sense.

Filming 9th December

Chloe and I filmed on Wednesday 9th December. We filmed at our friend Charlotte's house, this worked well for us as her room is quite big and she had a dressing table. However we did find difficulties in filming in her room, as filming closeups of anything on the dressing table were difficult because the area was quite cramped and we couldn't fit the tripod in the space between the chair and her wardrobe. it also was quite noisy filing in her house as there was someone watching tv downstairs, other than that the location worked very well for us.
We had also relied on our friend Guy to come be the male actor in our piece but he cancelled on us last minute, luckily we were able to persuade our other friend Matt to come help us out, he worked well for the roll, as he was able to take the filming process very seriously and he is very tall so he appear to be quite intimidating.
When we started to film, I could not work out how to focus the shots and some early clips in our draft reflect this, though because we were on a tight schedule we didn't have time to go back and correct these, we didn't see the blurriness of this shot properly until the editing scene. Chloe and I will be re-filming some shots in the near future so that our piece can be the best it can be.

Mark My Words First Edit

This is Chloe and I's first edit. This is a basic edit, with only one title and very limited sound effects. Over the next month Chloe and I will add more sound and brush up the areas that are weaker than others.

Sunday 6 December 2015

Location recce shots

Chloe and I wanted to film our piece in a room that had a dressing table, so we wouldn't have to fashion one out of a normal table. I have a dressing table in my room but it isn't big enough to fit all the camera equipment in, so the shots wouldn't have been as effective. Charlotte's room is perfect as it is quite girly and I feel it is quite representative of our character. The room also doesn't give anything away there is nothing in the room which would make the audience suspicious. Charlotte also has a mirror in her room which prevents us from having to buy one. Charlotte room is quite spacious so we should be able to set the camera equipment up very easily.

Filming schedule

Chloe and I have planned to film on Wednesday 9th December after school at our friend Charlotte's house. We would have done it on Sunday 6th December, but due to complications with the availabilty of charlottes house we have had to post pone to after our mock examinations, which we all finish on Wednesday. If we don't get all of our filming done on wednesday or we think of more scenes we need, we will film on the sunday following the 9th.

Risk assessment

  • We are using lighting equipment from school which has long cables, this is a harzard as someone could trip over, hurt themselves and/or knock over the light causing the glass to smash.
To over come this we will use masking tape so that the wire can't trip one of us and if for any reason glass breaks we will make sure it is cleaned up propery so we dont cut ourselves.

  • If one of us were to drop the camera while filming. Not only would it hurt us, it would also damage the camera which is very expensive.
To overcome this we must ensure we always have a firm on the camera and stay away from any dangers that could cause us to trip and/or drop the camera.

Audience resesarch - Responses

Male Actor costume

Guy will be wearing an all black outfit this makes him seem mysterious and possibly dangerous. He will be wearing black shoes, black skinny jeans and a black hoodie. This creates tension as he is not giving much away and with the hood up it is somewhat concealing his identity. His outfit will immediately cause the audience to suspect him as the villain. Guy won't be wearing makeup as it is not necessary to his character, he may have to wear some foundation powder, just in case the lights make his face appear shiny.

Analysis of Other Students Work - Sacrament

The second video from a previous student I watched was called sacrament. The sound in this clip is good and despite the scene being filmed outside there is no sound of wind or other unneeded non-diegetic sounds. The pace of the clip is quite slow and the shots are very simple but just seeing the little girl in a bright red coat in the woods is enough to create suspension. The sound placed over the top could have been done a bit neater but overall it was very good.

Analysis of Other Students work - Torn

The first video from a previous student I watched was an A grade example called Torn. I decided to watch this video as it would give me inspiration for my piece as I am aiming for a high mark. The camera work in this clip if very good, it has multiple different shots and the camera angles are very good. Chloe and I took inspiration from the various things flashing up from this video. It creates suspense really well and caused the audience to question what is going on. The mise en scene in this clip is done really well, his costume makes him seem quite normal, if not a little bit geeky. It causes the audience not to suspect him of anything, the lighting being very bright an natural also makes the scene appear quite normal. However the music juxtaposes the setting and lighting. The drawn out high pitched sounds create and eerie feel to the clip, that's what creates the most tension in the scene. The font and colour of the titles work really well, the white sans-serif font appearing over the scene is simple enough not to distract away from the scene but bold enough that the audience realises they are there.

Female Character Costume

Chloe will wear a simple outfit, it will be noting too fancy or over the top as she is only supposed to be a normal girl. she will be wearing just a plain white top and a black skirt. This does not reveal anything to the audience as to where she will be going or what she will be doing, though it does make her seem more girly which will cause the audience see her as the victim. Her makeup at the beginning of the scene will be very minimal with only foundation, this will make her appear flawless and less washed out by the lights. It will start with only foundation as she applies her makeup throughout the scene.

Male Actor

Chloe and I picked Matt for our thriller because he is our friend and he is convenient for the role as her will be available most of the time. Matt is also good for the role because he is a very tall male and with the right costume we can make him seem more muscular than he is. Matt does not look like the typical villain as his face is not that harsh or scary but his face wont be shown that much as he will only appear for a few seconds in the background of a mirror.

Female Actor

Chloe Mar-Gerrison will play the female character in our thriller. She is perfect for the role because she can look like an young adult which is what we wanted from our character. Chloe also has quite a petite frame which will make it easier to portray her as intimidated throughout the opening scene. She isn't very muscular so this makes it easier to show her being helpless and vulnerable. It was also easier to pick Chloe as she is in my group and will have to be where we were filming anyway. Even with Chloe acting in the scene, she will still have to take part in filming.

Thursday 3 December 2015

Props

These are the props we will be using in our final piece.

Mirror
Stool
Table
Makeup (various lipsticks, mascara, blusher, etc.)
Nail Polish
Hairbrush
Phone
These props all fit really well in our opening scene of our Thriller as they all go well with the narrative. Though none of the props are really representative of thrillers the opening scene is not supposed to be the main source of action, it is just setting up the story and creating a bit of tension. The props are also very simple and easy to set up.

Storyboard

Chloe and I have drawn our story board which shows a rough shot by shot, this will give us a brief outline for when we are filming. Though the storyboard is not perfect, it does not show every exact shot we will take but it gives us an outline to go by.

The beginning of the video will fade in from black, it will show a close up of a girl brushing her hair, the camera will then pan round from the back of her head to the front of her face. There then will be a high angle shot of the makeup table she is getting ready at, this is to show her location and to show there is no danger around. after this there will be a close up shot of a girl blowing on her fingernails in an attempts to dry them. This is when the first doll face will flash up on the screen, this will appear at various points during the scene. It will the cut to an extreme close up of the girl putting mascara on.

There will then be a shot of her putting her mascara down and her picking up a lipstick. Before we see her applying her makeup a phone will flash up on screen showing an unknown caller is trying to reach her. It will then cut to a shot of her looking down at her phone with her lipstick lingering near her lips, there will then be an eyeline match that will show her declining the call. As she actually applies the lipstick it will flash to many shots of text messages appearing on the phone. The phone will then ring again.

This time she picks it up and says hello. The next shot is her looking into the mirror as a man appears behind her, she gasps and then the screen will fade to black revealing the title of the movie.

We have not yet decided on a name but Hidden is one we have been thinking of using.

The Narrative

Our narrative is:

A girl is getting ready to go out in the morning and while getting ready she gets a call from no caller ID. When she doesn't pick up the phone she then receives texts from the caller, she starts to be more frantic while finishing her makeup. when the phone rings again she answers, says hello, a man then appears behind her and she sees him in the mirror.

Brainstorm

Chloe and I brainstormed ideas for our final piece, we wrote them all in a mindmap. We had three ideas, I felt like 'searching for friend in the woods' was a weak narative and could have been difficult to film as their are no proper woods around my school. I also felt as if this was too like a Stalker/Slasher film and  we were told to stay away from these sort of ideas.

The 'room full of girls mugshots' is what another group was doing so we wanted to have a more original idea so they werent simliar.

we picked 'girl getting ready in the moring, we thought this idea would be very intresting and think we could make it really well. This idea is very simple but wont be that easy to do, we are going to do lots of different camera angles.

Primary Reasarch - Questionnaire

These are the questions I asked in my questionnaire.

1. How old are you?
2. Male/Female?
3. Do you enjoy the thriller genre?
4. What was the last thriller you watched?
5. How often do you watch thrillers?
6. What colour do you think would be most appropriate for titles in a thriller?
       - white         -red        -black      - grey      -dark blue
7. What kind of character is most appropriate for a thiller?
       - Young man   - Old man   - Young woman   - Old woman

This will really help me in the process of making my thriller as it will show me what my target audience is and it will help me make difficult decisions such as who should be cast and font colours.

Preliminary Task - Evaluation

Through completing the Preliminary task we came across some strengths and some weaknesses.
Throughout most of the task we didn't have many weaknesses, only at the very beginning when it took us sometime to agree on a narrative for our short video and when we were unable to find a location that was quite enough to film in. Though we over came these, as we managed to come up with an idea that worked well and put in a sound floor and sound effects to cover up the noisy conditions we had to film in. obviously the dialogue and mise en scene didn't fit perfectly as it is very unlikely that a girl would get revenge on her cheating boyfriend in a school, though as this was the only space available for us we had to work with it, my final piece will be more professional than this, set in a more appropriate place to the narrative. I think that the strengths of this piece was that even though we came across problems such as being asked to stop filming in a room during the middle of filming, etc. we were able to get through them and still come out with a fully functioning short clip which turned out as I had hoped. I also think that my group worked very well together in making this video, and we came out with a piece that had good camera angles and the editing was done well.
Overall through doing this prelim task, I learnt lots on how to edit using Adobe Premium Pro and how to film properly with the use of angles and interesting shots. I feel as if the things that went wrong in the prelim task are things that I know now not to do when it comes to my final piece.

Preliminary Task - Video

Preliminary Task - Editing

This is an image of the final edited version of our prelim task.
The program we used to do this was Adobe Premium pro, this was quite simple to use but gave us the outcome we wanted. I found the editing stage quite challenging at first but after Sir went through it and explained the basics, it became a lot easier. I found the editing stage to be quite interesting and feel like it has helped all of us in my group, as now we know how to edit video footage properly. This will be every helpful in our final pieces.
We started with our unedited footage, which luckily was in order of  how it would be edited together. Once we put all the footage in order on the program, we saw that they just didn't fit together as smoothly as we had hoped, so collectively we all decided to look through all the footage we hadn't put in and try and piece together clips that made it flow better, once we did this we added transitions that would also add to how smoothly the video would flow.
Due to adding the sound floor we had to lower the background sound, which caused us to lose out on sound effects. So we had to download sound effects from a copyright free website and add them in. this caused it to sound and seem more natural.
Overall I feel that my groups preliminary task went better than expected.

Preliminary Task - Filming

When filming we came across the issue of where to film. We had filmed a short part of prelim task in a room that wasn't occupied by a class, but as the bell went for period two we were asked to leave the room as a class was being held in there. So we had to find a new room to film in and the only other available room was the year 11 common room, this was quite noisy due to the pastoral support talking with other children and a class next door who where quite loud. Earlier in the lesson during our camera safety talk, Mr Wilson had mention the use of a sound floor so I suggested we did this so the non-diegetic sound would flow naturally through the scene rather than it sounding cut up in the different takes.
After we had changed rooms however we started to film the scene properly, redoing some shots we had previously done upstairs. Mia did most of the filming as Sam and I agreed to be in the film. However all of us did have a go at filming sections so we were all familiarised with the cameras for our final pieces. Our group worked well together, and worked collaboratively in agreeing which takes we were going to use in our final version of the task.
Though towards the end of filming our camera started to run out of battery so the last few shots are not as polished as they could be, as we didn't have time to retake any and didn't want to risk not being able to finish our short scene. We also chose not to re-film the final shots as we didn't want to take time away from the editing stage.

Preliminary Task - Planning

My group (Mia, Sam and I) found it difficult to start with, in coming up with a plot to put behind the prompt. In the end we came up with the idea of a cheating boyfriend and a girlfriend seeking revenge.

We created a storyboard to help us during filming, this helps us while filming as it shows the sequence of shots we were to use and helps us to see how the final cut would hopefully look. Our storyboard was undetailed in the drawings and some of the descriptions but it gives us a basic outline on how to film. If we are to stick to this storyboard and outline then filming should go to plan.

The dialogue our group came up with is very simplistic but it relevant to the story behind our prelim task and links well with the cheating boyfriend scenario. We also listed the one prop we needed, which was ideally a fake toy gun but if no one could manage to get one then we would ask to borrow one from one of the food technology classes.

As a group we came up with the idea for the narrative, and we all agreed that the cheating boyfriend scenario was the best one. Writing the narrative down made it easier to stick to the storyline during the storyboard stage of planning.

Secondary Research of Thrillers

The top Grossing thriller on IMDb is Jurassic World (2015). However the top grossing thriller on Box Office Mojo under the category of Psycho/Stalker/Blank from Hell, is  Fatal Attraction (1987).

Jurassic World however is not classed as a proper thiller, it is more of an action/adventure film, with underlining thriller conventions. Jurassic World is number 3 on the top grossing movies of all time, just below Avatar and Titanic. Overall, on the opening weekends world wide it achived:

$524,418,134 (worldwide) (14 June 2015) (23,886 Screens)

Which proceds the budget which was $150,000,000 (estimated).

Fatal Attraction achived on its opening weekend in the USA only $7,602,740 (USA) (20 September 1987) (758 Screens). However it has now grossed to $320,145,693 (Worldwide).

This shows me that Thrillers are more popular when it is only used as a sub-genre, if it is paired up with other genres such as action/adventure then its more successful. Thrillers don't apeal to all audiences.

Jurassic Park

Director: Steven Spielberg
Writers: Michael Crichton (Novel), Michael Crichton and David Koepp (Screenplay)
PG-13
Adventure, Sci-fi, Thriller

The Universal Pictures logo is shown as they own the rights to the film and they own the brand of Jurassic Park.

Non-diegetic drum beats followed by a deep choral crescendo, it sounds almost like ritual music and gives a very powerful feel to the beginning of this scene. The deep vocals then transition into a sound bridge of rustling; the scene then cuts to a shot of an unknown object pushing its way through the trees causing them to part with the force its coming through. This creates
tension as it the audience doesn't know what is coming through the trees, it could be a dinosaur and all the people standing around are about to die.

The lighting is very dark, obviously shot at night time, the location is also somewhere deep in the jungle which makes the setting very mysterious. It puts the audience on the edge of their seat as danger could be lurking anywhere in the dark. The low key lighting casts shadows, which is because there are few lights at location but enough to light up the scene so you can see the actors faces. The darkness of the scene and the setting creates tension as anything could be hiding in the woods or shadows waiting to be attacked.

A point of view shot is used when in this extract and when a growl is heard. It's made known that this shot is supposed to be seen through eyes that are not human and the growl suggests a creature that is aggravated and possibly dangerous. The fact that we can only see the humans through a small rectangle shows us that we are looking through the eyes of the creature in the box. Guns are also visible in this shot which emphasise the danger of the creature in the box.

JURASSIC PARK

The font and colour of the title is an orange and red futuristic type font, the dirty orange colour could symbolise dirt and the production team might have used this font because it could be symbolic of big dinosaur foot brinks in mud, and the red could possibly foreshadowing some danger that while occur during the film. The Font is big and bold and is placed at the centre of the screen. All these aspects cause the audience to pay attention to it.

Fargo

Director: Joel Coen
Writers: Joel Coen, Ethan Coen

Crime, Drama, Thriller

These two logos are shown at the beginning of the film as these are the production companies that own the rights to the film.

Non-diegetic music starts playing when this statement appears on screen. The music is very melancholy giving a sad feel to the scene, at this point of the scene it is only being played with a piano but after that writing cuts to a muggy grey screen a violin is added to create more of a creepy feel. It creates tension as nothing is visible in the shot but the music is very loud and melancholy.

The Setting is very foggy and isolated. The fact the only thing you can see is two headlights in the distance shows how the location of the town is very far away from everywhere. The isolation of the setting creates tension as there could be on coming danger anywhere. It could also suggest that things could happen in the town without repercussions.

There is a long take, and the editing is very slow paced, it takes 1 minute and 25 seconds for the car to be fully in sight and another 14 seconds on top of that for the scene to cut. This creates tension as the audience really have no clue about what’s going on, it intrigues the audience and draws you in to watch more. Something this simple can really draw you in and encourages you to watch the rest of the film.

FARGO

When the names of the actors come up they appear over the scene, and they fade in. They all appear at the bottom of the scene in the centre. The font they have used is sans-serif making the film appear more modern, the first and last names of the actors are separated, and the last name has spaces between each letter. This causes the audience to focus on the names yet still pay attention to the scene.

The title of the movie appears in big bold letters in the centre of the screen, the letters are spaced out to fill as much space as possible, this draws attention to the title. The font is sans-serif like the actor’s names, and it appears over the scene. The background of the writing is the same muggy grey shown throughout, this implies that the town of Fargo is isolated and completely on its own.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1

Director: Francis Lawrence
Writers: Suzanne Collins (novel), Peter Craig and Danny Strong (screenplay)
PG-13
Adventure, Sci-fi, Thriller

At the very beginning of the opening scene, the screen is completely black and there is a sound bridge of a woman talking, the scene then cuts to Katniss sat alone in the dark. Katniss is chanting something under her breath, she is hugging her knees and seems nervous and twitchy. This shows that she has been through something distressing and traumatic, she is tucked away in the corner of a room, which could suggest that she feels safe and comfortable there.

The lighting at the beginning of the scene is extremely dark it is difficult to even see Katniss' features. the dark lighting and the fact she has secluded herself to a dark corner in the room gives little of her location, it is doubtful she is in any real immediate danger as all we can hear is hear is her whispering and an ambient sound of blowing air. But the darkness could suggest something is lurking in the shadows. A white light is then shone on Katniss sending her into a panic and she retreats further into the corner, when her features are finally shown it can be seen that she looks tired and appears to have been previously crying. This suggests that she is scared of the people who found her and that she has been through a deeply disturbing event.

After the light is shone on her, there is a long take. There is dialogue of a voice that is quite clinical and condescending that tells Katniss 'you need to sleep. We can help you sleep.' This suggests that the people are taking care of her in the unknown location, Katniss refuses the help suggesting she the woman may have an ulterior motive. A mysterious figure dressed in all black descends down the hallway and goes to grab Katniss. This creates tension as the audience doesn't know who the figure is and where they are taking her. There is more use of dialogue as Katniss shouts for the man to let her go, this could possibly suggest a fear of where they are taking her.

The scene cuts to Katniss lying on her hospital bed. the cameras focus changes from close up of pearl to Katniss. this suggest that the pearl is of great importance and is significant to the character. the fact if focuses on it for so long is to make the audience remember it, this film being a sequel so the pearl might have been something she was given or she found in the last film and it is focused on so the audience see she still has it. The focus then pulls from the pearl to Katniss' face as she sits up after Katniss hears crying. This suggest that the pearl brought her comfort when she was alone and it was silent, but when she hears crying the pearl cannot act as an object that takes her from the reality she is living.

During the duration of the scene the editing is at a quite slow pace, which suggest there isn't any sudden danger and Katniss is safe where she is. In the scene they have used a handheld camera which make the scene seem shaky. This could suggest Katniss has a fear or reluctance to be there. It creates tension as it shows us that even though everything seems quite quiet and relax she is afraid of something we haven't been shown on screen.

The font is very simple and minimalistic. It is a basic white font on a black background, they font is also very big, bold and in capitals which makes it stand out a lot. The 'mockingjay' is bigger than the other words because it is the actual name of the film and the most important part in the titles. 'The Hunger Games' is also bigger than 'Part 1' because the film brand is more important than the fact that it’s only the first part of the film.

Lost Highway Opening Scene

The lighting at the beginning of the scene is so dark you can only see the outline of his face which is lit up by his cigarette, which creates a sense of mystery around the character straight away we cant see the surroundings he is in or his face. The dim lighting creates shadows across his face so we can barley make out his features, this is very effective as the audience cant tell if he is the protagonist or not.

There is an ellipsis of time used in this scene, the lighting used gradually fades from very dark to quite bright, this is to show that time is passing, that he has been sitting in his chair smoking from night until day, without wasting time showing it. This suggests to the audience that he doesnt have much to do during the day, perhaps he is unemployed or lazy.

Diegetic sound is used when there is an extreme close up of the speaker. There is white noise coming from the intercom system in his apartment, it then goes silent before a voice states that 'Jake Murrant is dead'. The voice is bad quality as it is coming though an intercome system, this makes the scene more relalistic as, most sound isnt clean and perfect in real life. The mysteriousness of this voice creates tension as there is unknowing around the whole scene.
